My Top 5 Love Songs

I thought I'd try something new for once. I've decided to rank my favorite love songs. Feel free to leave comments naming some of your favorites.

5. Kathy's Song - Simon & Garfunkel

I loved this song before I ever knew what it was titled. A live version of it was included on The Essential Simon & Garfunkel. It's a 2-disc set that I would frequently throw in the CD player, switch on random, and just enjoy. The name Kathy isn't mentioned anywhere in the song, so it took me awhile to figure out the name of the track, which for me, means it can be titled "(Insert-Your-Love's-Name-Here)'s Song" I love the lyrics which include "My thoughts are many miles away. They lie with you when you're asleep and kiss you when you start your day." Easily one of my favorite tracks from Simon & Garfunkel in general.

4. Unintended - Muse

Track number 7 on Muse's first album, Showbiz. It's a little different from the typical Muse sound (if you can call what Muse does typical.) Matthew Bellamy's exceptional voice really brings this song to life. I adore the lyrics: "You could be my unintended choice to live my life extended. You could be the one I'll always love." I totally believe that there are many who find their life partner unintentionally. You don't find love. It finds you.

3. If You Want Me - Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova

Once has a stellar soundtrack. I couldn't pick a favorite track. I'm not even sure if this fully qualifies as a love song. It seems that a love song wins me over with good vocals and great lyrics. "If You Want Me" is no exception to that. I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure this song is about each of the main characters' significant others. As such, it's just so moving to hear them yearn to resurrect their 'failed' relationships.

2. If I Fell - The Beatles

A Hard Day's Night was the first CD I ever owned. Track 3 was "If I Fell." It's a little sad, a little sweet. I love it. I also liked the way they used it in Across The Universe, there sung by a woman. I wish I had more to say. I seem to love it without much justification.

1. How Can I Tell You - Cat Stevens

There's a little bit of irony here. I couldn't quite explain why I loved "If I Fell." Now, my favorite song is just that. It's a love song where our poet can't think of "the right words" to explain his love. The lyric "Wherever I am, girl, I'm always walking with you...but I look and you're not there" reminds me of that Simon & Garfunkel lyric I mentioned above. Only here, it's more heartbreaking. There's so much longing in his voice.

To Sum Up:

  1. How Can I Tell You - Cat Stevens
  2. If I Fell - The Beatles
  3. If You Want Me - Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova
  4. Unintended - Muse
  5. Kathy's Song - Simon & Garfunkel

I will counter with my list:

1. Maybe Tomorrow - Nouveau
2. Complicated Melody - India Arie
3. She's Everything - Brad Paisley
4. Love Theme (Kissing You) - Des'ree
5. Come What May - Nicole Kidman/Ewan McGregor

Each of these, for different reasons, has the power to turn me into a quivering puddle of goo.

Two Baz Luhrmann related songs. Nice.

For some reason, I've always greatly preferred "America" to "Kathy's Song." But I like your list

I love 'America' too, but it's not really a love song, so I couldn't really put it in this list.

Ironically, while 'Kathy's Song' makes no mention of the name Kathy, 'America' does (mention the name Kathy that is.)

There's a pretty good cover of 'America' by Josh Groban that's worth looking into.

I'm beyond impressed that you recognized BOTH of the Baz songs.

I loooove "America". But, yeah. Not a love song.

"I said, Be careful, his bowtie is really a camera."

I do share a birthday with Baz. What did you expect?

I didn't know that! That's pretty rad.

(I share mine with Michael Stipe. Cool, but not as cool.)
